The $1 Thrift Store Coffee Cup That Changed My Daily Routine

Jun 22, 2025Sydney Vegoda Hovis

I have so many special mugs that it’s hard to even begin writing such an article. Coffee, tea, and hot cocoa have been the only consistent rituals I’ve had throughout my life—well, that and brushing my teeth first thing in the morning.

The vessel I use to drink my hot beverages is just as important to me as the contents inside the cup. Which is why I teeter on the verge of offense to type such an article, but virtue demands I must.

Recently, during an excursion to the newest thrift shop in Niles, I found it.

Of course, I didn’t know it at the time. But once I got it home and poured in that first cup of coffee, I knew—I had discovered the very best coffee cup I’ve ever used, and it only cost me $1.

A vintage brown glazed ceramic Rega mug, this little beauty is far smaller than most mugs in my collection. But its compact size is a quiet revelation. For the first time, I’ve started finishing my coffee while it’s still hot, rather than leaving a third at the bottom to grow cold and stale. It’s a simple joy I didn’t know I was missing.

Even better, the way it fits into your hand is perfect. The curve of the handle nestles comfortably between my fingers, and the weight of it—just heavy enough—grounds me like a stone pulled from a river. It’s a mug that insists on presence. No multitasking. No reheating. Just the moment and the coffee.

It has a soft clink when set down, the kind of sound that feels like home. The glaze is mottled and rich, with a slightly uneven rim that gives it that unmistakable handmade charm. I like to imagine the person who once owned it, who also chose this mug above the others in their cabinet—maybe for the very same reasons I do now. Maybe they, too, held it on slow mornings, or while reading something they didn’t quite understand, or while listening to the hum of a dishwasher or the voice of a loved one on the phone.

There’s a kind of poetry in finding something so ordinary and so perfect on a thrift store shelf. It reminds me that joy doesn’t have to be big or flashy. Sometimes, it’s just hot coffee in a little brown mug that fits your hand like it was always meant to.

So no, I won’t be ranking all of my favorite mugs in this post. That feels like asking a mother to choose her favorite child.

But I will tell you this: if you ever stumble across a humble Rega ceramic mug in a shade of brown that looks like molasses in late afternoon light—buy it. Don’t think. Just buy it. And if it doesn’t become your favorite, send it to me.

I’ll give it a good home.
